Welcome to The Drop: Thanksgiving Edition

Wrapped: The Gift of Clarity: A Tale of Two Families

This week we continued our final message series of the year, Wrapped.

A dysfunctional family is a place you want to stay away from.
A healthy family is a place you want to move towards.

Check out this week's message, The Gift of Clarity: A Tale of Two Families, where Pastor Josh speaks to each version of these families

Message Notes

Proverbs 11:29 (NIV)
Whoever brings ruin on their family will inherit only wind, and the fool will be servant to the wise.

What is a Dysfunctional Family?
“A family with multiple ‘internal’ conflicts, (sibling rivalries, parent-child conflicts, domestic violence, mental illness) or ‘external’ conflicts,  (alcoholism or drug abuse, extramarital affairs, gambling) that affect the basic needs of the family unit.”

A place where a variety of healthy family principles are violated, resulting in chronic problems.

A place where effort makes things worse.

A place where values are not positive, upheld or enforced.

A place where hurt and negative experience is greater than feeling good, safe or nourished.

Summary: A dysfunctional family is a place you move away from.

Psalm 27:10 (NIV)
Though my father and mother forsake me,    the Lord will receive me.

What is Family?
The place where you feel safe, are nourished and grown.

A Family Is A Collection of Safe People

My Safe Place

My Empowered Place

Love isn’t a currency that should be weaponized.

My Real Place

A healthy family is a place you want to move towards.
A dysfunctional family is a place you want to stay away from.

QUESTION: “I grew up in a messed up family, and I am now repeating many patterns from the past. What should I do?”
ANSWER: Identify which patterns need to be changed, then focus on the action steps that will enable you to move toward emotional health and healing.

Closer to God, Closer to Self, and Closer to Others

  • Create Structure Which Builds Goodness
  • Create Real Generational Impact
  • Create Open Systems

Mark 3:31-35 (NIV)
Then Jesus’ mother and brothers arrived. Standing outside, they sent someone in to call him. A crowd was sitting around him, and they told him, “Your mother and brothers are outside looking for you.” “Who are my mother and my brothers?” he asked.  Then he looked at those seated in a circle around him and said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! Whoever does God’s will is my brother and sister and mother.”

Your Family Is More Than Biological

Psalm 27:10 (NIV)
Though my father and mother forsake me, the Lord will receive me.
