Wrapped: The Gift of Boundaries

This week Pastor Josh continued Wrapped, a message series about the gifts that will transform your family, by taking a look at the gift of boundaries. Healthy boundaries are key to healthy families.

Check out this week’s message as Pastor Josh teaches on five categories of boundaries we need to consider in our lives and in our families.

Message Notes

QUESTION: “I grew up in a messed up family, and I am now repeating many patterns from the past. What should I do?”
Answer: Identify which patterns need to be changed, then focus on the action steps that will enable you to move toward emotional health and healing.

Mark 3:31-35 (NIV)
Then Jesus’ mother and brothers arrived. Standing outside, they sent someone in to call him. A crowd was sitting around him, and they told him, “Your mother and brothers are outside looking for you.” “Who are my mother and my brothers?” he asked.  Then he looked at those seated in a circle around him and said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! Whoever does God’s will is my brother and sister and mother.”

Healthy boundaries are key to healthy families.

What is a Boundary?
A boundary is a limit or space between you and the other person; a clear place where you begin and the other person ends.

What is a Boundary?
A chosen set of behaviors that I will and will not accept from others.

Matthew 23:4 (TLB)
They load you with impossible demands that they themselves don’t even try to keep.

Learn to Protect your Heart

Proverbs 4:23 (NIV)
Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.

5 Categories of Boundaries
1. Physical Boundaries
2. Emotional Boundaries
3. Relational Boundaries
4. Time/Energy Boundaries
5. Spiritual Boundaries

Learn to Say “No” (nicely if you can)

Matthew 5:37 (ESV)
Let what you say be simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything more than this comes from evil.

Guidelines for Tricky Conversations
  • Stick to the facts.
  • Watch your words and body language carefully.
  • When people become furious, become curious.
  • Seek clarity more than resolution.
  • Look for ways you can change yourself.

Learn to Love Without Rescuing

Proverbs 19:19 (NLT)
Hot-tempered people must pay the penalty. If you rescue them once, you will have to do it again.

Recipe for Rescue
  • Do whatever is necessary to avoid any conflict.
  • Provide assistance when they make poor choices.
  • Feel responsible for their wellbeing.
  • Make excuses for their unhealthy behavior/choices.
  • Put their needs ahead of yours.

Learn to Love Without Rescuing

Galatians 6:5 (NCV)
Each person must be responsible for himself.

Psalm 34:18 (NIV)
The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.

Closer to God,
Closer to Self, and
Closer to Others
