Merry Christmas Eve!

It's finally here!  Join us tonight for one of our Christmas Eve services, as we celebrate the birth of Christ!

Two Service Times: 3:30 PM & 5:00 PM

Wrapped: The Gift of Unlearning

In this message, Pastor Josh Pennington concludes Wrapped, our final series of the year, by taking a look at the gift of unlearning.

Half of spiritual growth is learning what we don’t know. The other half is unlearning what we do know, allowing us to loosen or let go of strongly held beliefs about ourselves and others.

Check out this week’s message as Pastor Josh teaches six things to unlearn.

Message Notes

QUESTION: “I grew up in a messed up family, and I am now repeating many patterns from the past. What should I do?”
Answer: Identify which patterns need to be changed, then focus on the action steps that will enable you to move toward emotional health and healing.

One of The Greatest Presents You Could Give Yourself, and your family Is the Gift of Unlearning

You have heard that it was said…” “But I tell you…”

Matthew 5:21-22 (NIV)
“You have heard that it was said
to the people long ago, ‘You shall not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.’ But I tell you that anyone who is angry with a brother or sister will be subject to judgment.

Matthew 5:27-28 (NIV)
“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’  But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

Matthew 5:38-39 (NIV)
“You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’ But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also.

Matthew 5:43-44 (NIV)
“You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,

Half of spiritual growth is learning what we don’t know.  The other half is unlearning what we do know.

Unlearning - the process which allows you to loosen or let go of a strongly held belief about yourself and others.

Things to Unlearn
1. Fearing Mistakes
2. Fitting In
3. Waiting for Instructions
4. Don’t Question Authority
5. Self-Criticism
6. Pre-occupation with the Judgement of others

It takes time to unlearn the patterns of behavior we have been brought up to accept as the norm.

Unlearning involves knowing the difference between current circumstances and final outcomes.

Unlearning requires both humility and teachability.

1 Corinthians 8:1b-3 (NLT)
But while knowledge makes us feel important, it is love that strengthens the church. Anyone who claims to know all the answers doesn’t really know very much. But the person who loves God is the one whom God recognizes.
